Emeralds are the best known and produced Colombian gemstone. The Boyacá region is the largest exporter of this stone in the world. At the International Emerald Museum, visitors can see the whole process of extraction of the mine, polishing, cutting and sale of each stone.
The tour inside the museum is divided into three parts:

Video screening that features an introduction to the way of life in the emerald mines, along a fascinating journey that passes through colorful and rugged landscapes of the Colombian Andes

A tour of a 27 meter tunnel simulating the four original sites of the first Colombian mines: Gachalá Chivor and Muzo Coscués.

A gallery of Emeralds showcasing some of the most beautiful designs in the world including jewelry and more than 3,000 pieces.
You can also buy an emerald to take home at the end of the museum.
Attraction Instructions
Located up on the 23rd floor of the Avianca Building close to Bogota’s Gold museum is the International Emerald Museum. If you decide to visit the museum you will need to take some identification so the guards at the ground floor reception can give you a visitor’s pass. After taking the lift up to the 23rd floor you will arrive at the reception and scan your Bogota Pass. Then you will be met by a guide.

There is also a workshop inside the museum where you can watch technicians cut and polish the green gemstone. Afterwards, take time in the gift shop and check out the beautiful pieces made from Emerald and enjoy the view of Bogota from 23 floors up.
